Choosing the right X video resolution

Understand pixel dimensions, portrait video, data use, and why the number of available MP4 sizes differs by post.

Read width and height together

Resolution is written as width × height in pixels. A 1920 × 1080 video is landscape; a 1080 × 1920 video is portrait. Both have the same number of pixels, but their orientation is different. Comparing only the second number can therefore be misleading.

On the download page, the largest width × height combination appears first. That makes the list easy to scan, but the best choice still depends on where you will watch or use the file.

Higher resolution is not always the best choice

More pixels can preserve detail on large screens or during cropping. A larger file, however, takes longer to transfer and uses more storage. Video quality also depends on compression and bit rate, so two files with the same dimensions may not look identical. A resolution label alone cannot promise a particular visual result or file size.

If you only need to watch on a small phone display, a moderate version may be more practical. If you plan to archive a clip or edit it later, the largest available MP4 offers more room for cropping. Choose based on your actual use rather than the biggest number by default.

  • Quick viewing on a phone: try a smaller or middle version first.
  • Presentation on a large display: choose a larger version if the source provides it.
  • Limited mobile data or storage: prefer a smaller file and avoid downloading several versions unnecessarily.

Why some posts show fewer choices

X and its media network decide which playback versions exist for a particular upload. The original upload, its shape, and processing can affect the returned options. XSave shows the MP4 addresses actually found for that post. It does not resize, upscale, or create extra versions.

In a local check on September 13, 2026, one public landscape post returned five MP4 sizes: 480 × 270, 640 × 360, 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, and 3840 × 2160. This is an example, not a fixed menu; another post may return fewer choices or different dimensions.

You may see a streaming playlist as well as MP4 files in the source data. This site uses complete MP4 addresses for the download list and leaves the playlist out, because a playlist is not itself one ready-to-save MP4 file.

When a version does not download

Try a different listed size. A source file may become unavailable or return a temporary access error while another version still works. If the site sends you to the source video in a new tab, use the browser’s own save control. If none of the versions work, return later or check whether the original post is still public.
