The XSave Blog · Browser behavior
Why a video sometimes opens instead of downloading
Understand why browsers may show a video player or a save dialog, and what to do when either appears.
The browser decides how to handle the response
Clicking a download link starts a request, but the final screen depends on the browser and the response from the media server. Some browsers save the file immediately. Others can display an MP4 in a built-in player first.
Opening a player is not necessarily a failed download. Look for the player menu or your browser’s save option. On a phone, the action may be inside the share menu or under a long press, depending on the browser.
The source link can change after the page was saved
XSave keeps the post and its available media addresses to make a reusable resolution page. The file itself remains on the source media network. If that source later refuses the request or stops serving the file, a saved XSave page cannot make the missing file reappear.
When a link stops working, revisit the public post and submit its URL again to refresh the available choices. If the post is private or removed, there may be nothing for the lookup to return.
A short checklist before retrying
First check the browser downloads list: the file may already be transferring in the background. If a new tab shows the video, use its save control. If you see an error, wait briefly and retry the source post URL.
If the same resolution repeatedly fails, another listed size may still work. Keep the post URL when reporting an issue so support can distinguish a stale media link from a browser-specific behavior.
